Dangers of the Dating Method

Transferred from my previous blog

In continuation of my notes and thoughts
on my current reading...

In the years preceding marriage,
the majority of Americans
do something they call 'date'.
This is actually a new concept...
not the same approach we see throughout history.
And now, it's quite easy
to be comfortable with it because
we're growing up with it,
are familiar with it, and surrounded by it.

But this is very dangerous.
Because of dating,
many marriages end up in divorce...
few are truly happy,
and many enter into marriage with scars.
Many Christians are also suffering from this
and from a past of dating.

Why is this happening?
Because everyone planning to marry 'someday'
have high standards of who they are going to marry,
but they don't keep to the same standards
when they date.
"It's only a date", they'll say,
without even realizing the emotional bonds
that form so quick and easy.
Then they experience the pain of breaking up,
or marrying someone who's not strong in Christ,
or maybe not even a Christain at all.
This pain and heartache is not pleasing to God,
nor is it His will for us!
He wants us to be happy
and appreciate His will for us.
What can be better than a couple
that God Himself brought together!

But, how will I ever get married if I don't date?
Well, God gives Scriptures
that are filled with principles and concepts
neccesary to making the right decisions
in this area (as in all areas).
All I need to do is wait for God
to bring the person in His timing.

I don't know if or when I'll get married,
but it's a comfort that God does.
He has made it quite clear
He has work for me as a single young maiden.
I don't even need to date, flirt,
consume my time thinking of boys,
or even search for a husband.
The Lord is perfectly able to do it without my help.
And when God brings the right man into our lives,
He'll give the opportunities essential to get aquainted.
But it is neccesary to remember
there is no other reason
to have a romantic relationship
for any other purpose but marriage.
"This I say then, Walk in the Spirit and
ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh."
Galatians 5:16

I really like your dress! Very nice! Does'nt it give you a feeling of stisfaction after you finish somethiing you've been working on really hard? I always feel like that after finishing a sewing project. I hope you continue to feel better, and remember, I'm still praying for you!

Ally, I didn't date my husband. It was as you said. The Lord revealed his plan for us to both of our hearts. People tend to think I'm really strange when they hear my story, but that revelation is what kept us cemented together through the difficult growing pains of our early marriage. He had a plan for us and was more than willing to share it with us. We are reaping the blessings of being obedient to Him. I commend you for your wisdom in this area and pray for you to continue to be sensitive to the leading of His Spirit.
